What is street soccer? Rules
Street soccer courts/pitch
In HCI, there are 3 street soccer courts. One in High school at the EP3 shed, one at JC opposite Kong Chian administrative office and one at the international school.
However, to play street soccer, you do not necessarily have to play in a street soccer court. All you need is 4 objects to arrange the 2 goalpost, an empty space and a football. There is no fix size of a street soccer court, and the texture of the pitch can range from hard ground to grass.
Number of players
In HCI, we play 4v4 at the high school court, 5v5 at the JC and IS. However, this is just the norm and it is not fixed. When there is too little player to play a match, then students can choose to play a match with lesser players (4v3, 3v3, 3v2 2v2). In many cases, students play “last man” where there is no goalkeeper. The team appoints one player to be the last man, whose role is to be a player and a keeper at the same time. He is free to move around in the court, and is responsible for blocking shots. Another option is to play 1v1.
In many street soccer competitions internationally, it is usually a 4v4 competition or a 5v5. In some competitions, especially for 4v4, there is no goalkeeper, but the last man rule applies. When not playing in competitions, there is no limit to the number of players. Basically, the players decide the number of players who can play at any one time, and whether a last man rule is adopted.
How to play 1v1 in HCI
This is usually played when there are too few players to play a match. In 1v1, there are 2 variations to the game. In both cases, the player’s movement is restricted to only his half of the court.
In the first variation, the attacker (the player who has the ball) can only shoot in his semi circle. The defender can block the attacker’s shot from anywhere in his own half. However, he can only handle the ball in his semicircle. If the attacker shoots wide and out of the court, then it is the defender’s turn to shoot. If the attacker shoots wide and the ball is deflected back into his own half, then the attacker can attack the defender’s goal again (He has to shoot from his own semi circle). If the attacker shoots wide and the deflection is not strong enough (the ball is moving back to the attacker’s half), the defender can chase the ball and bring it back to the semi circle to shoot. When there is a goal, a new challenger comes into the court and the defeated player leaves.
In the second variation, the first 3 shots must be played in the semicircle, in any sequence depending on the situation. For example, the attacker (the player who has the ball) shoots at the defenders goal, the ball is deflected back to his own half and he tries again. This time the ball goes out of play, and it is the defender’s turn to shoot. After the defender shoots, three shots are played. After the first 3 shots, the players can shoot from anywhere in their own half. Similar to the first variation, the defender can block the attacker’s shot from anywhere in his own half. However, he can only handle the ball in his semicircle. If the attacker shoots wide and out of the court, then it is the defender’s turn to shoot. If the attacker shoots wide and the ball is deflected back into his own half, then the attacker can attack the defender’s goal again. If the attacker shoots wide and the deflection is not strong enough (the ball is moving back to the attacker’s half), the defender can chase the ball and shoot. When there is a goal, a new challenger comes into the court and the defeated player leaves.
Rules
In most street soccer competitions the rules are similar. The differences are the duration of the game and whether matches are played based on round robin, point system or knockout. The ball is a size 4 or size 5 ball.
In most cases, the game starts from a middle ball or when referee throw the ball into the court
Goals
1) Goalkeepers are not allowed to score goals.
2) Goals can only be scored outside the penalty area (semicircle at the goalpost)
3) Whenever a goal is scored, the conceding side starts the game from a goal kick after the referee blows his whistle
Goalkeeper
1) The goalkeeper cannot handle a back pass. If he does so, a penalty will be awarded.
2) The goalkeeper must no waste time intentionally. If he does so, a penalty will be awarded
3) The goalkeeper can only roll the ball to players using an underarm pass. He cannot play an overhead pass. If he does so, a penalty will be awarded
Outfield player
1) All outfield players cannot enter the penalty area. A penalty is awarded when the defender enters his own penalty area. An indirect free kick is awarded when the attacker enters opponent’s penalty area.
2) At any one time, there must be 1 player in the opponent’s half. A foul will be given to the whole team if all players are in their own half.
Fouls
It is a foul to
1) Tackle opponent’s feet
2) Slide tackle
3) Push
4) Trip
5) Do a body check
6) Charges at player
7) Spit on player
8) Bites player
9) Use vulgarities
10) Make obscene gestures
11) Hit a player
12) Fight with other players
When the above fouls are committed, yellow cards, red cards and blue cards are awarded.
There is a red card in all tournaments. However, sometimes there will only be yellow or blue cards.
A red card means the player is send off for the rest of the match. It is awarded for serious fouls.
A yellow card means a warning to a player when he commits a foul and a suspension. The suspension time may vary from 1-2 min. The player returns from suspension after that.
A blue card is a suspension from play when player commits a foul. The suspension time may vary from 1-2 min. After that, the guilty player is not allowed to play, but is replaced by a substitute.
Whenever a player commits a foul when the opponent shoots at goal, a penalty is awarded. If not, a direct or indirect free kick is awarded.
Penalty and free kick
All players will stand at a side. The penalty taker will face the goalkeeper. The ball will be placed outside the penalty area. Play will resume if the penalty is blocked into the court.
Whether the free kick is direct or indirect depends on the tournament rules. In an indirect free kick, the free kick taker has to pass the ball. Usually, the opponents have to stand 2 meters away from the ball. In a direct free kick, the free kick taker can shoot without having to pass. Usually, the opponents have to stand 3 meters away from the ball.
Out of play
When the ball flies out of the court from the goal line, the goalkeeper takes a goal kick to resume the game. This is regardless of who takes the last touch.
When the ball flies out from the side, the player from the team that do not have the last touch resumes play with a roll in or a kick in (depending on tournament rules). When rolling the ball, it must be an underarm motion.
